Ahoy Matey!!

I just got off the ship after spending 11 days with Russ and had such a great time.  I've ridden the ship twice before, but this was my longest trip.  During my visit we went to 5 different ports and I was able to see more of what his job is like and see the inner workings on what goes on from port to port.  Russ's work/sleep schedule was a bit different than my normal schedule but I did my best to get on his schedule in order to spend as much time together as possible.  It was so great to be able to just enjoy time together and not have to worry about cooking, cleaning, or pretty much anything.  It was like a vacation for me to just eat, sleep, and spend time with him.  Even though Russ and I talk/email frequently when we're apart, I still felt like I had so much to tell him and catch him up on.  I showed him my latest sonogram pictures, we listened to baby's heartbeat with the fetal doppler together, we talked about baby furniture, and spent some time with Ben too.

While we were out at sea, I found it to be so peaceful to be surrounded by the ocean, far away from the hustle and bustle of everything on land.  One night during Russ's watch I tried to capture the beautiful night sky but it was too dark out.  It was such a beautiful night that night......bright full moon reflecting off the ocean, lots of stars scattered across the sky, a nice breeze, the smell of the salty ocean in the air.....it was perfect.  Then there were nights of thick fog and cloudy skies; it seemed to vary every night.  One night it was super windy.  We had winds of up to 59.3 knots that made the ship tilt pretty far under its force, which was a little scary but also thrilling at the same time.

Even though I was on the ship a good while it seemed to just fly by!  When it was time for me to get off the ship and say goodbye, it was really hard.  Russ arranged for a cab to take me to the airport for my flight home and he rode with me.  I really appreciated him riding with me since it gave us a little bit longer to be together.  I was happy to take every minute I could.  It's looking like his next trip is going to be a long one.  My visit with him on the ship though renewed my spirit and will help me get through the next couple months while he's gone.  There was one more U.S. port on the schedule after I got off the ship so we were able to talk on the phone (without having to pay for phone cards--yippee!!) for a couple more days which was really nice---it's the little things :)

When my flight arrived in Atlanta my parents were there to pick me up.  It was so comforting to see their faces.  It's so nice that mom and dad are going to be here for six months because of my dad's job. And within that six months they'll help keep me busy while Russ is gone, they'll get to spend time with Russ when he gets back, they'll be here for the arrival of their first grandbaby, and still be around a little after baby arrives.  The timing couldn't be more perfect!

Here are some pictures of my time aboard the ship:

21 Weeks

Best moment this week:  Still being on the ship with Russ.

Sleep:  Sleeping as well as I can while trying to adjust to Russ's work schedule.  It's quite hard but worth it since doing so will allow me to spend the most amount of time with him.

Movement:  Feeling movement a little more distinctly these days.

Food cravings:  Had a crazy craving for strawberry ice cream and the ship just so happened to have some!!  What are the odds?!  I was a very happy camper!

Gender:  Unknown by choice.....any guesses???

What I miss:  Long, hot baths......my baths now are just warm and not very long.

What I am looking forward to:  Russ coming home....it'll be awhile but I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Milestones:  Baby has fingernails, toenails, eyelashes, and eyebrows now and is learning how to sleep and wake in cycles.

Baby Size:  banana

Weekly Wisdom:  Having a pregnancy app on your phone is very useful, especially when traveling.

20 Weeks

Best moment this week:  Getting to see Russ.....and I will be able to see him for more than just a day since I was approved to ride the ship....hooray!!!  :)

Sleep:  I am sleeping surprisingly well on the ship.....not sure why considering we are sharing a twin size bed.  I'm attributing it to being with my other half.

Movement:  Random thumps and thuds still.

Food cravings:  Still nothing in particular but I have been starting to want more sweets here lately (which is definitely a change from earlier on in the pregnancy).  I'm trying to be careful though because my gestational diabetes screen is coming up in a couple weeks.

Gender:  Unknown; we're waiting to find out until baby's big debut!

What I miss:  Going to the bathroom less frequently.....I go through about a roll of toilet paper a day, haha.

What I am looking forward to:  The rest of my time on the ship with Russ.....I feel like I have so much to share with him.  I had my anatomy scan the day before I got on the ship so I can't wait to share that experience with him, show him the ultrasound pictures, and let him hear baby's heartbeat on the fetal doppler!

Milestones:  A successful anatomy scan....baby looks healthy so far (see below).

Baby Size:  small cantaloupe

Weekly Wisdom:  You can stretch the life of your regular jeans while pregnant by using a ponytail holder to "button" them.

19 Weeks

Best moment this week:  Shopping at the maternity store.  I had a great experience with the friendly sales associate and found some cute dresses and some jeans.

Sleep:  Getting better at staying on my side at night and putting a pillow between my knees helps too.

Movement:  Random thumps and thuds.

Food cravings:  Nothing on a consistent basis but my most recent craving was for a Krispy Kreme doughnut...which I didn't get but it's probably only a matter of time before I cave.  My normal portions aren't enough anymore, I've been eating like a horse!

Gender:  Unknown

What I miss:  Not being able to sit still very long.  I'm quite restless these days.

What I am looking forward to:  My next appointment with the midwife; it's time for the anatomy scan ultrasound.  I'm really excited to see the baby's progress.

Milestones:  Vernix caseosa is beginning to coat baby's skin.  This coating helps regulate baby's body temperature and helps protect baby's skin while submerged in amniotic fluid.

Baby Size:  heirloom tomato

Weekly Wisdom:  Don't feel guilty when you start to sleep more than normal....you and baby need it!

Milestones:  The baby can hear me talk/sing.

16 Weeks

Best moment this week:  Spending time with my parents and I think I felt baby move this week!

Sleep:  Better....I think I am mastering sleeping solely on my side now.  It took awhile for me to get the height of my pillow right to support my neck.

Movement:  I happened to be reading online about quickening (the initial movement of the baby where the mother actually can feel it) while I was laying in bed and I put my hand on my belly and felt two distinct thumps.  It could've been anything but I'm going to say it was baby.

Food cravings:  Now that I'm in Italy....pizza and pasta.

Gender:  Unknown

What I miss:  Russ; it's especially hard without him during the holidays and now I'm an emotionally hormonal pregnant lady to boot!

What I am looking forward to:  My next appointment with my midwife.

Milestones:  Feeling baby's first movement and Grandma and Grandpa Jasso bought baby's first outfit (see below).

Baby Size:  avocado

Weekly Wisdom:  Cherish every moment with your loved ones.

15 Weeks

Best moment this week:  Preparing to go home for the holidays.

Sleep:  Hit and miss....I'm thinking about investing in a pregnancy pillow.

Movement:  Not yet, but it shouldn't be too much longer.

Food cravings:  Nothing new.

Gender:  Unknown

What I miss:  Having more energy...I feel like such a bump on a log sometimes.

What I am looking forward to:  Spending the holidays with my parents.

Milestones:  The tiny bones in baby's body are beginning to harden, which is known as ossification.

Baby Size:  apple

Weekly Wisdom:  Nothing worth having is ever gotten easily.  (This one I got from Russ)

14 Weeks

Disclaimer: I got behind with the blog so the next couple weeks don't line up with the days posted, just wanted to put that out there to avoid any confusion if there was any :)

Best moment this week:  Getting a lot done around the house.  I mostly feel exhausted rather than energetic so the bursts of energy are refreshing and definitely welcome.

Sleep:  Been sleeping a little better.  I think the trips to the chiropractor are helping.  I find myself sleeping on my back at times during the night...but I'm trying to nip that in the bud before I hit the 20 week mark when it's not recommended to sleep on your back anymore.

Movement:  Not that I can discern yet.

Food cravings:  Nothing new this week.

Gender:  Unknown

What I miss:  Sleeping through the night.

What I am looking forward to:  Feeling the baby move.

Milestones:  Starting the second trimester.

Baby Size:  lemon

Weekly Wisdom:  You're not a pioneer (my dad used to tell me this all the time growing up to remind me that many on this earth have gone before me and have experienced that which I was anything less than enthusiastic about and had successfully done so).

13 Weeks

Best moment this week:  Getting to hear baby's heartbeat again.  This time it was 156 bpm.

Sleep:  Still having issues with sleep; may be due to my pillow or my lower back and hip that have been bothering me...headed to the chiropractor soon to hopefully remedy the back and hip discomfort though.

Movement:  Not that I can feel yet.

Food cravings:  Nothing in particular lately, just random things I'll think about or see and must have.  Also, when I'm drinking water, it has to have ice in it...for some reason it seems more yummy with ice.

Gender:  Unknown

What I miss:  Being able to eat steak that isn't well-done and raw sushi.

What I am looking forward to:  Starting to show.

Milestones:  Baby can make a fist and even suck his/her thumb.

Baby Size:  medium shrimp

Weekly Wisdom:  If you get a flu shot during your pregnancy, there is a preservative free option available.  You might have to seek it out but it's out there.
